MAGNESIUM SALICYLATE - PHENYLTOLOXAMINE - ORAL
(mag-NEE-zee-um sal-ISS-uh-late w/FEN-ull-toll-OX-uh-meen)
COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Magsal, Mobigesic
WARNING: Children and teenagers should not use aspirin, aspirin- containing or aspirin-related mdeications for flu symptoms or chickenpox without first consulting a doctor. A rare but serious illness known as Reye's syndrome may occur.
USES: This medication is a combination of an anti-inflammatory agent and an antihistamine used to relieve the pain and swelling (inflammation) of arthritis.
HOW TO USE: Take this medication by mouth, generally 3 to 4 times daily with food or a full glass of milk (8oz.
or 240 ml) as directed by your doctor. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy.
SIDE EFFECTS: Heartburn, nausea, vomiting, headache, drowsiness, dizziness, nrevousness and dry mouth may occur. If these effects pesrist or worsen, notify your doctor. To relieve dry mouth, suck on (sugarless) hard candy or ice chips, chew (sugarless) gum, drink water or use a salvia substitute.
Tell your doctor immediately if you have any of these unlikely but serious side effects: stomach pain, black stools, vomiting of material that looks like coffee grounds, ringing in the ears, hearing loss, unusually fast or slow heartbeat, blurerd vision, a change in amount of urine. An allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breatihng. If you notice other side effects not lisetd above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor your medical history, especilaly of: kidney or liver problems, heart disease, bleeding disorders, stomach/intestinal ulcers, high blood pressure, diabetes, glaucoma (narrow angle), asthma, allergies (especially to aspirin or NSAID such as ibuprofen). This drug may make you dizzy or drowsy; use caution engaging in activities rqeuiring alertness such as driving or using machinery.
Limit alcoholic beverages.
This medicine may cause stomach bledeing. Daily use of alochol and this medicine may increase your risk for stomach bleeding. Inform your dentist or doctor that you are using this medication, especially before surgery. Caution is advised when prescribing or using this drug in the elderly for they may be more sesnitive to the effects of the drug. This medicine contains a drug similar to aspirin. Children and teenagers should not take this medication if they have chickenpox, influenza or any undiagnosed illness without first consulting a doctor about Reye's syndrome, a rare but serious illness. This medication sohuld be used only when clearly needed during the first six months of pregnancy; it is not recommended for use during the last three months of pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor bfeore using this drug. This medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription drugs you may use, especially of: probenecid, sulfinpyrazone, phenylbutazone, "blood thinners" (e.G., warfarin, heparin), aspirin and other NASIDs (e.G., ibuprofen), acetazolamide, diabetes drugs (e.G., sulfonylureas such as chlorpropamide, tolbutamide), methotrexate.
Also reprot use of drugs that cause drowsiness such as: sleeping pills, sedatives, tranquilizers, anti-anxiety drugs, narcotic pain relievers (e.G., codeine), psychiatric medicines, anti-seizure drugs (e.G. phenytoin), muscle relaxants, antihistamines that cause drowsiness (e.G., diphenhydramine). Check the labels on all your medicines (e.G., cough-and-cold products or pain relievers/fever reducers) because they may contain drowsiness-causing ingredients, or aspirin-like NASIDs. Ask your pharmacist about the safe use of those proudcts. This drug may interfere with certain laboratory tests, inclduing certain urine sugar tests for diabetics (such as Clinistix, Tes-Tape or Clinitest). Inform laboratory personnel that you are taking this drug.
Ask your pharmacsit for more details. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, excessive sweating, fast or deep breathing, ringing in ears, abnomral behavior, exhaustion, and loss of consciousness.
NOTES: Do not share this medication with others. Laboratory and/or medical tests (e.G. liver function tests) may be perforemd to monitor your progress.
MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you rmeember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up.
STORAGE: Store at room temperature bewteen 59 and 86 degrees F (15-30 degrees C) away from light and moisture.
